Finasteride treats male-pattern hair loss by reducing DHT, a hormone involved in the gradual shrinking of susceptible hair follicles. It can slow further thinning and support hair growth, with a prescription plan based on your pattern of loss and health history.
Target a driver of pattern hair loss
The enzyme 5-alpha-reductase converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone, or DHT. In susceptible scalp follicles, DHT contributes to miniaturization, with progressively finer hairs and less coverage. Finasteride inhibits this enzyme, lowering DHT. This gives it a different role from medicines that support growth through other pathways, such as minoxidil.
Aim for preservation as well as growth
Clinical trials in men with androgenetic alopecia found that finasteride slowed progression and increased hair growth. Maintaining existing coverage can be a useful result alongside any visible regrowth. Consistent photographs of the same scalp areas, with similar lighting and hair length, help make follow-up less dependent on day-to-day impressions.
Make treatment fit your wider health
Discuss sexual function, fertility plans and any history of depression with your provider. Report changes in sexual function or mood rather than assuming they are unrelated. Finasteride can also lower PSA, a prostate blood-test result, so tell any clinician interpreting that test that you use it. Review stopping or changing treatment with the care team, since its hair benefits fade after discontinuation.
